Facial Feminisation Surgery (FFS)

Feminising face surgery

Facial feminisation surgery (FFS) encompasses various surgical procedures designed to alter masculine facial features to align with a more traditionally feminine appearance, often sought by transgender women.

Dr Breidahl has been performing facial feminisation surgery since 1995. He has a thorough knowledge of the field and comfort in working in this anatomy through his extensive training in craniomaxillofacial surgery. After training in Craniomaxillofacial surgery at the Royal Children’s Hospital Melbourne, Great Ormond Street Hospital for Sick Children in London, Chang Gung Memorial Hospital in Taipei, New York University Hospital, and UCLA, he worked for a decade as a craniofacial surgeon reshaping, repairing and restoring children’s skulls and foreheads at the Royal Children’s Hospital. A founding member and president of the Australian Society of Craniomaxillofacial Surgeons, he set up international craniofacial units in Ho Chi Minh City and Hanoi in Vietnam and Columbo in Sri Lanka, teaching these skills to local surgeons through Plastic Surgery Charities of Operation Smile and Interplast. He has extensive experience in Rhinoplasty, developed through his work with cleft lip rhinoplasty, post traumatic rhinoplasty and cosmetic rhinoplasty. He still teaches rhinoplasty to Plastic Surgeons in training at the Royal Melbourne Hospital.

Due to his skills in this field he has been sought out for the past 27 years by patients wishing to soften their facial appearance along feminine lines.

In 2023 Dr Breidahl was invited to give a well received educational talk on Facial Feminisation Surgery to the Royal Australian College of Surgeons Annual Scientific Conference.

Dr Breidahl was also an invited attendee and contributor to The Australian Roundtable on Gender Affirming Surgery 2023.

Dr Breidahl has developed a keen eye for facial harmony and believes that achieving a balance between all the facial features is key to obtaining a feminised face that allows the emergence of the individual beauty of each patient. He avoids the use of formulaic approaches as he finds that the individuality of the patient may be lost with those approaches.

Each individual is carefully assessed taking into account the wishes and aims of the patient. Patients benefit from their own selection of various tools that may assist in Facial Feminisation, including hairline lowering, brow reduction, forehead smoothing, orbital burning, rhinoplasty, lip lift, mandibular reduction, facelift and blephoroplasty. Each patient will have a different combination of procedures to match their needs.

A full and frank discussion of safety is very important to Dr Breidahl, so patients know what complications may occur and what areas it might be best to tread carefully to minimise significant complications from surgery.

‘Any surgical or invasive procedure carries risks. Before proceeding, you should seek a second opinion from an appropriately qualified health practitioner.’
